Burke Creek Watershed Partnership
Introduction
The Burke Creek Watershed is located in Stateline, Nevada in Douglas County. The watershed contains Burke Creek and its tributaries. The following communities lie within its drainage:
- Oliver Park
- Lake Village
- Terrace View
The watershed is bordered to the north by McFaul Creek Watershed and to the south by Edgewood Creek Watershed. The Burke Creek Watershed drains the area around Castle Rock in the headwaters and terminates at Nevada Beach as it enters Lake Tahoe.
Improvement Projects
Past Projects
- Lam Watah Trailhead and Trail Reconstruction. USFS. 2004. BMP trailhead, BMP trail, and replace bridge with boardwalk to span SEZ, improve water quality, and provide accessible surface.
- Tahoe Yellow Cress Test Plots. USFS. 2006. Tahoe Yellow Cress is endangered in Nevada and is currently identified as a priority 8 Candidate for listing under the Endangered Species Act. A fenced enclosure to determine best management tools for conservation was constructed on Nevada Beach.
- Burke Creek/Kahle Ditch Restoration Project. Douglas County/USFS. 1992. Environmental Improvement Project to install stormwater conveyance infrastructure and infiltration basin along Kahle Drive.
- Kahle Drive Water Quality Improvement Project. Douglas County/Oliver Park GID. 2007. Environmental Improvement Project to install stormwater conveyance infrastructure and constructed wetlands in Oliver Park GID.
Current Projects
- BMP Water Quality Retrofit. USFS. 2011. BMP improvements will include water quality treatment facilities in the parking areas, re-grading parking areas to convey surface water to runoff treatment chamber; upgrade of facilities to meet water quality and accessibility thresholds, and the decommissioning and restoration of trails throughout Rabe Meadow.
- Lake Village Phase II EIP Project. Douglas County/Sierra Colina. 2011. Currently in the construction phase. Designed to treat stormwater along Echo Drive in Lake Village. Nevada Beach Day Use Area and Campground Facilities.
Future Projects
- Burke Creek-Rabe Meadow-Complex Ecosystem Restoration Project. Nevada Tahoe Conservation District. The project seeks to develop a planned ecosystem restoration through multiple Environmental Improvement Projects (EIP), Water Quality Improvement Projects (WQIP), Stream Environment Zone (SEZ) restoration and meadow restoration. The project will address ecosystem restoration, resource improvement and protection, and stormwater quality improvements.
- Nevada Stateline-to-Stateline Bikeway, South Demonstration Project. USFS. Bike system will link recreation areas, community centers, transportation facilities, and neighborhoods and to expand recreational access and transportation choices for residents and visitors to the Tahoe Basin.
- Sierra Colina Development. Planned single and multi-family residential neighborhood designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green and Energy Star Certification.
- Tahoe Beach Club Development. The Tahoe Shores trailer park is slated for redevelopment into the Tahoe Beach Club.
